Krista and Hugo's MyEdSpace experience

The homeschooling teachers that needed a hand

Krista and Hugo's story

Krista is a qualified primary teacher. Her husband teaches secondary music. And, their two boys have never been to a traditional school.

“We’ve always homeschooled,” she says. “It was the plan at first just for a few years. Hugo couldn’t talk until he was five, and later we found out he was autistic. He’s clever, really clever, but we just thought we’d keep him home a bit, save some money, and maybe send him to the private school my husband worked at.”

But the years went by, and homeschooling simply worked.

“Our boys are both musicians. They sing in a cathedral choir, they rehearse all the time. School hours just wouldn’t fit. And honestly… we loved having them at home.”

Still, even with two parents who teach, there came a point where they hit a wall, especially in one area. “When he got to about Year 8, I started struggling teaching him science,” she admits. “I’m a musician myself. Not brilliant at science. So I was looking online.”

Around Easter, she stumbled across MyEdSpace. “Back then he was doing the after-school lessons, just catching up because of choir. Then the homeschool daytime lessons launched in September and it was perfect timing.”

It changed everything.

“The teaching is excellent”

Homeschooling is flexible, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Before MyEdSpace, their learning setup was a patchwork of Oak Academy, borrowed worksheets from teacher friends, and whatever resources Krista could find online.

“It was quite bitty,” she admits. “MyEdSpace is just… consistent. Everything looks the same, works the same. And the teaching is excellent.”

“There’s only so much time in the day. With MyEdSpace, I don’t need to be there as much, and Hugo can get on with it. I can do my own work, check in now and again… and know he’s in good hands.”

Breaking the boring barrier

Hugo has always been curious. Always enjoyed “knowing things,” as his mum puts it. But MyEdSpace has given him something even she couldn’t.

“With the live lessons, he’s recognised,” she says. “His input matters. It’s taken his enjoyment to another level.”

English was the breakthrough.

“They both hated writing,” she laughs. “They had the knowledge, but physically writing… no. I used to dread teaching English. But MyEdSpace somehow made it fun. I couldn’t do that.”

Hugo himself picks up the story, “I didn’t used to like English, but now I do. We’re doing An Inspector Calls and it’s really interesting. Sheila’s my favourite character.”

Hugo is a quietly confident child - very matter-of-fact and clearly proud. Outside academia, he plays piano and organ, sings in the choir, loves Marvel and Lego — and dreams of becoming either an organist or a doctor.

He studies English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics - the full package - on MyEdSpace, and talks about his experience with the precision of someone who uses the platform every day.

His favourite? “Biology.” The hardest? “Maths. But I still really like it”, he smiles. Meanwhile, the subject he once disliked is now the one he’s most enthusiastic about.

His teachers?  “My favourites are probably Nick, or Dav… but they’re all really good. They’re the funniest.”

His favourite moment? “42% of 25 is the same as 25% of 42,” he says proudly, recalling something he learned in Maths.

“I like the dashboard. It shows the upcoming lessons. I was a bit late today — I just tapped on the lesson and it took me straight to it.”

One reservation. One lesson. One answer.

“I didn’t have big worries,” Krista says. “Just, is this worth spending money on?”

It took a single lesson for the answer to become yes.

“And it’s only got better. More teachers, better platform, and the homeschool daytime lessons… they’ve been absolutely brilliant for us.”

“I tell anyone whose children are struggling, when you think about the price compared with a tutor, it’s amazing. People pay £60 or £70 an hour for one lesson. MyEdSpace is a genius idea.”

For this family, MyEdSpace didn’t just fill a gap. It gave structure, freedom, and quality, all at once. Or, as Krista puts it:

“MyEdSpace made learning fun. They’ve made it consistent. And they’ve made my life so much easier. I honestly think everyone should do it.”
