Which is more effective online tutoring or a 1-to-1 private tutor?

Which is more effective online tutoring or a 1-to-1 private tutor?

23.10.2025

When it comes to the effectiveness of different educational approaches, much depends on two things; the individual student’s own learning style or preferences and the quality of the teacher.

Most important of all is the quality of the teacher.

That’s why, we have scoured the UK to find the very best teaching talent. We reject 99% of applicants and only the exceptional make it through. We're brutally selective because our student’s future - and in turn our own reputation as the ‘Best Online School 2025’ - depends on it.

When looking for a private tutor, parents have to embark on an onerous selection process and with the average private tutor costs now as high as £33 an hour for primary and a massive £42 an hour for A-levels, for too long, families have had to choose between cheaper, less experienced tutors, or highly qualified ones that ask for thousands per subject.

We do things differently.

Only the top 1% of teachers who apply to work with us are successful. Meaning you can rest assured that instead of a Grad Student looking to earn a few extra £s, your child is learning from highly-qualified teachers, who’ve spent years honing their talent for educating.

With MyEdSpace, there’s no compromise on quality - you’re just not paying for empty travel time or inefficiencies. By bringing people together, we ensure every child can access the UK’s top teaching talent at a fraction of the cost of hiring a private tutor. It’s a 10x better education, at 10% of the cost.

Our live lessons take place on YouTube Live and just like a university lecture, we teach hundreds of students together, with no limits on class sizes. While this might seem unusual, having a larger group actually fosters a sense of community. The students motivate one another, making the learning experience more fun.

Which brings us on to the other big benefits of learning online in a larger group, compared to learning 1-to-1 with a private tutor.

Learning alongside their peers encourages more questions and collaboration, boosting confidence, engagement, and energy levels. Vital to effective learning, these can all be lost in a more intimidating 1-to-1 setting where anxious students can feel ‘put on the spot’.

Our teachers are experts in providing safe, engaging learning environments, where there is zero-judgment and questions are encouraged. Plus, all student cameras are switched off, so no student appears on screen.

We’ve chosen our specific way of delivering lessons to ensure that there’s no pressure to speak on camera or in front of the class – students can participate through the chat and ask questions anonymously.

And, we’ve found that this makes all students substantially more likely to contribute by asking and answering questions, while also providing a 'strength in numbers' feeling of reassurance and all the other benefits associated with collaborative learning.

That’s shown in the volume of questions and messages our students send during the average live lesson. In a traditional classroom, the average student puts their hand up to contribute at most once or twice a lesson - with MyEdSpace that skyrockets to 25 messages, creating an incredibly interactive, friendly, atmosphere.

Additionally, the pro package includes a 1-1 Personal Mentor who you can contact outside of lesson time, which is not available in the Standard package. Support is provided by WhatsApp message to the number provided on the student dashboard.

Our mentor team have all been trained by our teachers, all excelled in their A-levels and all currently attend top UK universities like Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London. We’ve found that our mentors' similar age makes it easier for students to connect with them, building trust and understanding.

Unlike with a private tutor, where progress is difficult to track, with MyEdSpace, we make sure every student is working at a level that’s right for them.

Each month parents receive a progress report, while students can see their course progress via the ‘Progress’ section on their student dashboard. If we (MyEdSpace, parent and student) all feel that a student is struggling, or not being pushed hard enough, we can adjust the year group or course level up or down accordingly.

Academically, the results of our approach and the 16,000+ MyEdSpace students who have studied with us speak for themselves.

⭐ Triple the national average achieved a GCSE grade 9 and over half of our GCSE Maths grades were 7-9 (51%) - also triple the national average

⭐ Over one-third of our students achieved GCSE grades 8 or 9 (35%), compared to just 12% nationally

⭐ Well over half of our students achieved GCSE grade 7 or above (56%), compared to under a 25% nationally (22%)

⭐ Last year, 100% of our A-level Maths students that completed 15+ homeworks achieved an A/A*

⭐ Almost three-quarters of our A-level students achieved B or above (73%), nationally it was slightly over half (55%)

⭐ Compared against non-MyEdSpace students, double the numbers of MyEdSpace A-level Physics students achieved an A or A* (67%), compared to the national figure of only 32%

⭐ Almost twice as many of our A-level Biology students achieved A or A* (45%), nationally it was only 28%

⭐ Over half of our A-level students have been admitted into Russell Groups universities (56%) compared to only 27% across the UK

Anecdotally, the story is the same.

⭐ 95% of parents reported finding learning on MyEdSpace helpful for their child’s education

⭐ 83% of parents noticed a positive attitude change in their child after using MyEdSpace

We’re proud that this is reflected in their reviews, where we’re rated ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ on both Trustpilot and Google Reviews.
