A complete guide to Year 10: GCSEs begin
Year 10 is where the GCSEs - which take place across Years 10 and 11 - properly begin. Children in Year 10 are usually 14 and 15-years old.
While there’s no exam at the end of Year 10, the content covered now, will form part of those final exams.
Here’s what to expect from Year 10 and what help and support is available.
What students study in Year 10
Alongside encountering an increasing complexity in English and Maths. Year 10 is also the year when students find that the more generalised subject of ‘Science’ splits into three distinct areas of study: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Each will be tested at the end of Year 11, where GCSEs are graded 1-9, with 9 being the highest. In practice, grade 4 is a standard pass and the minimum most employers and colleges accept. Grade 5 is the government's "expected standard" and the benchmark most sixth forms use for entry, and grade 7 is broadly equivalent to the old grade A.
Maths and Science GCSEs are also "tiered". Foundation tier caps the maximum grade at 5, while Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9, so deciding which tier to study is a key decision.
Most GCSEs are assessed entirely through final exams, with no coursework for the majority of subjects, sat in May and June of Year 11. That's exactly why the revision habits and exam technique built in Year 10 matter so much, rather than leaving it all to the final year.
