A complete guide to Year 11: GCSE exam year

Year 11 is the second and final year of GCSEs, and culminates in sitting exams during May and June. Students in Year 11 are usually 15 and 16-years old.

Not only does the pressure of exams that test two years of study loom large across Year 11, students are also deciding what comes next - which all adds up to an intense period in a child’s education.

Here’s what to expect from Year 11 and what help and support is available.

What students study in Year 11

Students continue the subjects they choose in Year 10, including (but not limited to) English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Before sitting the final exams, most schools run mock exams between November and February. Mocks matter more than students realise, for a variety of reasons:

1. Mock exams expose students to exam conditions, helping remove some of the fear of the unknown

2. Mock exams are useful for identifying where any gaps are while there's still time to close them

3. Mock results are used to set predicted grades, which in turn help inform sixth form and college applications.

Final GCSE exams run from mid-May to late June, with morning and afternoon papers spread across five or six weeks. During this period students don’t usually attend normal classes and may study from home between exams. Students receive their GCSE results in mid to late August.

How to support a student in Year 11

A few simple things make a real difference this year:

• Help establish a realistic revision timetable

• Create an environment where that revision can be done - often a quiet, comfortable spot somewhere where they’re unlikely to be unduly disturbed

• Take mock results seriously but calmly - use them to identify gaps rather than induce complacency or panic

• Act now if they're struggling - a few months of targeted support can shift outcomes significantly

• Keep the conversation open about next steps - without adding pressure

• Reassure them that results matter, but there are always options - Clearing, resits and a variety of other routes all exist
