A complete guide to Year 5: what to expect and how to help
Year 5 is the second-to-last year of primary school in the UK, part of Key Stage 2 (KS2), which runs from Year 3 to Year 6. Children in Year 5 are usually 9 and 10-years old.
Year 5 doesn’t include any formal exams, so it's easy to treat it as a quiet year. But for families applying to grammar school, the 11+ exam arrives in September - right at the start of Year 6 - making Year 5 the ideal window to prepare without last-minute pressure.
Year 5 is also the year that kids build the reading, writing, scientific and Maths skills that will be tested in their Year 6 SATs and will form the foundations for much of their secondary education.
If your child is in Year 5, here's what to expect this year, and how to support them through it.
What children study in Year 5
Year 5 is about building the core literacy and Maths foundations your child will rely on for the rest of their education. Reading fluency, written expression, times tables, and problem solving all get more demanding this year, building on what was introduced in Years 3 and 4.
Year 5 doesn’t include any formal examinations, with SATs marking the culmination of Key Stage 2, not being taken until the end of Year 6. However, the content they test is built across both Years 5 and 6 together, and the habits and confidence kids build in Year 5, tend to carry straight into Year 6 and beyond.
Year 5 is also very important for families considering grammar school, because this is when preparation for the 11+ exam begins in earnest. The 11+ covers verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, and Maths skills. The 11+ is the first formal examination many students will face, so starting to get prepared early can make a massive difference.
How you can support your child in Year 5
A few simple things make a real difference this year:
-
Encourage and support regular reading - Even 15 to 20 minutes a day builds a habit and fluency that will be invaluable both for the KS2 SATs and into Key Stage 3
-
Keep an eye on their times tables and mental Maths skills, as these underpin a lot of what comes later
-
If you're considering grammar school, start looking into 11+ formats and preparation options early
-
Stay in touch with your child's teacher about how they're getting on, without waiting for parents' evening
-
Keep things low-pressure and fun - Year 5 is all about building habits that can last a lifetime, aim for steady progress, not exam-level intensity
