A complete guide to Year 7: the start of Key Stage 3 (KS3)
Year 7 is the start of Key Stage 3 (KS3) and - for many children - the first year of secondary school in the UK. Children in Year 7 are usually 11 and 12-years old.
Alongside a potential move to a new school - and a switch from having one teacher in one classroom to having a different teacher for every subject (eight or more) and moving between rooms all day - Year 7 is a big step up in terms of the depth and breadth of content being covered.

What children study in Year 7
Year 7 brings a much wider range of subjects than primary school. Alongside English, Maths, and Science, students will now also encounter subjects like Computing, Design Technology, Drama and Languages.
Most schools place students into ability groups, called "sets", for Maths, English and Science, usually based on Year 6 SATs results or baseline tests taken in the first few weeks. The set your child is placed in affects the level of work they're given, and can follow them through to GCSEs, so it's worth knowing where they've been placed and raising concerns early if the set they’ve been assigned doesn’t feel right doesn't feel right.
With no exams on the horizon Year 7 can feel like a low-stakes year. However, the habits, assigned-sets and foundations built now will carry through into GCSEs, so it’s important to keep the momentum moving in the right direction.
How you can support your child in Year 7
A few simple things make a real difference this year:

Help them set up a simple homework routine in the first few weeks of the new term - even 20 or 30 minutes a day can make a difference

Find out their sets for Maths, English and Science early on - and raise it with the school if their assigned level doesn’t feel right

Stay in touch with the school about how they're settling in - without waiting for parents' evening

Watch for signs of social difficulty - with the move to new schools and different subject-classrooms, Year 7 friendships can be turbulent
