A complete guide to Year 9: choosing GCSE subjects
Year 9 is the final year of Key Stage 3 (KS3) in the UK, which runs from Year 7 to Year 9. Children in Year 9 are usually 13 and 14-years old.
Year 9 is when your child picks the subjects they'll study at GCSE - and sometimes sees their first introduction to GCSE-level content. Every student takes the core subjects, English (Language and Literature), Maths and Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), on top of which they typically pick additional subjects from whatever their school offers.

What children study in Year 9
Through Year 9, students continue to build on their English, Maths, and Science foundations, alongside subjects like Computing, Design Technology, Drama and Languages.
During Year 9, students will be asked to narrow down their GCSE options. Their choices will include things like: History, Geography, a Modern Foreign Language (typically German, Spanish or French), Computer Science, Art, Design Technology, Music, Drama and PE - although the exact options will vary. There's no formal limit on how many GCSEs a student can take, but most schools structure their options so students end up with nine or 10 in total.
Certain A-level subjects and university courses require specific GCSEs. For example, if your child drops a language now, then studying it at A-level becomes difficult. The choices made here don't lock everything in, but they can make options more or less available later on.
How you can support your child in Year 9
A few simple things make a real difference this year:

Look at the school's GCSE options booklet together and start having those conversations well ahead of the deadline

Ask what they enjoy and what they're good at - these aren't always the same thing and both matter

Do a little bit of research into A-levels and university requirements - even if you’re not certain that’s the option they’ll take, a little knowledge gained now can be valuable later

Reassure them that while their choice of GCSEs matter, it isn't permanent - people can (and do) change direction all the time
