Winter is the perfect time to try something new, and ice skating is one activity that’s hard to beat! Whether you're a pro or laughing through your first few falls, ice skating is a fun, festive escape everyone can enjoy.

This guide is packed with everything you need to know—from tips and tricks for beginners to links to the best rinks nearby. Ready to hit the ice? Let’s get started!

What we cover:

Why ice skating is perfect for winter— the health benefits

Ice skating isn’t just a fun activity; it has some amazing benefits, especially for students.

A study exploring the effects of figure skating found that it can boost motor skills, mental health, and social interactions—all key areas of development for students. Let’s break it down!

Motor benefits:

Ice skating helps students improve coordination and body awareness. They develop better balance, muscle strength, and spatial orientation as they glide across the ice. This strengthens physical fitness and builds essential motor skills, which can be valuable in other sports and everyday activities.

Mental benefits:

Ice skating is also great for mental health. Students who engage in the sport often experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence. The focus required to stay balanced and glide smoothly also sharpens attention and memory, improving cognitive skills. These mental benefits can help students not only on the rink but also in their academic lives.

Social benefits:

On the social side, ice skating is perfect for building relationships. While it encourages a healthy level of competition, it also fosters a sense of community and teamwork. As students participate together, they form connections, share experiences, and enjoy each other’s company, improving their social life and sense of belonging.

Why this matters for parents

These benefits are a great reason for parents to encourage their kids to try ice skating. The physical benefits help keep them active and healthy, while the mental and social advantages can enhance their overall well-being. Plus, it's a fun way for families to bond—whether skating together or cheering from the sidelines.

Ice skating tips every beginner needs to know

Wear something flexible

Layer up, but keep it flexible! You’ll want to stay warm without feeling too restricted. You need something cosy but stretchy—leggings, long-sleeve tops, and maybe a light jacket.

Avoid thick socks, as they can mess with balance; thinner socks that go above the skate boot are best. And don’t forget gloves! They’ll keep your hands warm and protect them if you fall.

Pick the right skates

For beginners, figure skates are often easier because they have a longer blade. If you’re renting, check that the skates feel snug but not too tight; you should be able to wiggle your toes. Make sure to lace them up snugly to support your ankles, especially around the top. This helps with balance and prevents slipping.

Find your balance

First things first—don’t rush! Take it slowly and stay close to the edge of the rink until you feel steady. Bend your knees slightly to lower your centre of gravity; this will help with balance and control.

Imagine you’re a penguin—keep your feet a bit apart and shift your weight slowly from one foot to the other. And remember, keep your head up! Looking down might throw off your balance.

Learn to fall and get up safely

Let’s face it: falling is part of ice skating! But, learning to fall safely can help you feel more in control and reduce the chance of injuries. If you feel yourself going down, try to fall forward instead of backwards. Bend your knees, tuck your chin to protect your head, and try to land on your side. Avoid bracing your fall with your hands, as this can hurt your wrists.

When it's time to get up, take your time. First, roll over onto your knees. Then, place one foot on the ice between your hands for balance, and gently lift yourself up while keeping your knees bent.

This will help you regain balance and prevent you from tipping over again.

Learn how to turn

Turns are essential when skating—you can’t just skate straight! Start with small, gentle turns by shifting your weight from one foot to the other. Keep your knees slightly bent and your arms out for balance.

Point your toes in the direction you want to go, turn your hips, and lean into the turn. You’ll get more comfortable with bigger turns and even skating backwards as you practise.

Learn how to stop

Stopping on skates is one of the most important skills. Instead of just hitting the boards or letting your momentum slow you down, you can use a few techniques to stop effectively.

  1. The Snowplow Stop: Start by bending your knees and turning your toes slightly inward. Push out with the middle of your feet, creating a "V" shape, and let the inner edges of your skates slow you down.

  2. The T-Stop: Glide forward with one foot slightly in front, then place the other foot behind it in a T-shape, shifting your weight onto the back foot to stop.

  3. The Hockey Stop: This one’s a bit advanced but looks impressive! Start by turning both feet out to the side while you’re moving, leaning into the stop. It takes practice, but you’ll feel great once you get it down.

Practise frequently

The best way to get comfortable on the ice is simply to practise. Don’t worry about skating perfectly right away—just focus on getting used to the ice and feeling balanced. With regular practice, you’ll notice improvement each time.

Most importantly, have fun!

Remember, skating is all about enjoying the experience. Take a moment to appreciate gliding across the ice—it’s an incredible feeling! Don’t worry too much about getting everything perfect. Just keep moving, laugh at yourself if you fall, and savour the fun of being out on the ice.

Extra tips for family skating with kids

If you're skating as a family, here are some tips to make it enjoyable for everyone:

  • No hand-holding right away: Let everyone, even the little ones, find their balance on their own. This can prevent everyone from tumbling together!

  • Consider skating aids for toddlers: These can be helpful for very young kids, but make sure they're not too big, as bending over can affect their balance.

  • Laugh off the falls: Kids will fall, and that’s okay! Make it part of the fun—no injuries, no worries. Just smile, laugh it off, and try again.
