How to teach Biology at home: a guide for home educators

Biology can be one of the most naturally engaging subjects to study at home, because it can be seen, and felt, in the world around us - how our bodies work, why species evolve, how ecosystems balance themselves - in ways that make abstract concepts feel grounded and real.

Biology is also one of the most content-heavy GCSE and A-level subjects, which means that when you reach that point, approach and structure can matter as much as enthusiasm.

This guide covers how to teach Biology at home from Key Stage 3 (KS3) through GCSEs and on to A-level.

What makes Biology different from the other sciences

Biology sits alongside Chemistry and Physics in the science curriculum, but it has a distinct character.

Where Physics leans heavily on mathematical reasoning and Chemistry on understanding reactions and bonding, Biology requires strong memory and retrieval skills, a grasp of specific scientific vocabulary, and the ability to apply conceptual understanding to unfamiliar contexts.

This matters for how you approach teaching it at home. Mnemonics, retrieval practice, and regular low-stakes testing are more effective for Biology than simply sitting and passively reading notes. Building in regular recall exercises, where a student tries to reproduce what they know from memory before checking their notes, is one of the approaches that’s widely  supported by research.

Teaching Key Stage 3 (KS3) Biology (Years 7, 8 and 9, ages 11 to 14)

At KS3, Biology is taught as part of an integrated ‘Science’ curriculum rather than as a standalone subject. 

During KS3 Science, students cover cells, reproduction, health and disease, photosynthesis and respiration, ecosystems, and genetics in broad introductory terms, laying the foundations that GCSE Biology will build on.

Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 are the ideal time to create and develop skills which will be useful later down the line. To give just one example, because Biology is a heavily visual subject at GCSE - cell structures, organ systems, the carbon cycle, food webs - it helps to get children used to drawing and labelling diagrams.

Teaching GCSE Biology at home

GCSE Biology is one of the three Triple Science subjects, alongside Chemistry and Physics.

AQA GCSE Biology is built around a core understanding of biological principles, including the structure and functioning of cells and how they divide by mitosis and meiosis, the role of variation and fertilisation, and the two essential reactions for life on Earth - photosynthesis and respiration.

The full specification is divided into seven topic areas assessed across two papers:

  • Paper 1 - Cell Biology, Organisation, Infection and Response, and Bioenergetics

  • Paper 2 - Homeostasis and Response, Inheritance, Variation and Evolution, and Ecology

Practical skills: what home educated students need to know

AQA GCSE Biology includes 10 practical skills. Unlike A-level, there is no separate practical endorsement at GCSE - the practicals feed into questions on the written papers rather than being assessed independently

The required practicals are clearly laid out in the specification and are deliberately open in their design, so students can develop and demonstrate the relevant skills in ways that suit their context. Around 15% of marks across both papers assess practical skills and working scientifically.

Studying GCSE Biology online

Teaching A-level Biology at home

A-level Biology is a significant step up from GCSE in both content volume and the depth of analysis required. It is also one of the most valued A-levels for university admissions in medicine, veterinary science, biological sciences, psychology, and healthcare. 

A-level Biology includes a separate practical endorsement (known as CPAC - Common Practical Assessment Criteria) which is assessed by teachers through direct observation of practical skills during the course. Unlike at GCSE level, the assessment of practical skills is a compulsory requirement at A-level - and should be taken into account when thinking about studying A-level Biology at home. 

The 12 required practicals for AQA cover: enzyme rate, root-tip mitosis, water potential, membrane permeability, dissection, aseptic technique, leaf-pigment chromatography, dehydrogenase activity, respiration in yeast, animal responses, glucose calibration by colorimetry, and the effect of an environmental factor on species distribution - other exam boards may vary. Practical skills account for around 15% of the written paper marks on offer.

As with GCSE Biology, to help prepare home educated students, each practical skill is covered in detail in a dedicated live, online lesson. Students are guided through an example method, planning an experiment and working through related practice questions.  

Studying A-level Biology at home
