Meet the employee - Shannon Priem: from Colorado to MyEdSpace
As a Lead Product Manager, it’s my job to make sure that we’re giving our customers the best possible experience with MyEdspace.
People's experience of MyEdSpace goes across multiple places - from our website, to informing people about our courses and the revision tools students use every single day. My job is to provide the right tools for people to use at the point they need them.
I spend a lot of time talking to people. Talking to students to understand what we can do to help them with their revision needs. Talking to engineers to understand what we can do and when. Talking to people across the business to ensure we’re focusing on the right things at the right time. I really like that aspect of my job, there’s a lot of teamwork and a lot of camaraderie. The only frustration is that there are so many great ideas to try, but only so many hours in the day to try them. But prioritising which idea we’re going to work on next is a fun challenge.
One of the things I love about working at MyEdSpace is the energy, enthusiasm and ambition of people. There are some super smart people here, and they come from all over the world, which I really like.
I grew up in Colorado in the United States. As a child, I wanted to be a lawyer. I thought they were smart and I loved the idea of being able to argue - and prove - your point. But then, when I got around to applying for Law School, a Business degree appealed to me more. I studied Marketing, International business and minored in French which I really enjoyed. I’d studied abroad when I was 16 and really enjoyed learning and speaking a new language, so I was excited to go back and pick that up again. I couldn’t have done that if I’d gone into law.
After school, I found an internship in a Digital Marketing and Social Media consultancy which led me to my first big job out of college - working for a top Advertising Agency.
I was recruited to work in their interactive production department creating ads, apps and websites. It was my job to be the link between the creatives and the engineers, to ensure we got the right things built at speed. I really enjoyed the scrappy, creative, can-do environment - MyEdSpace has that same feeling. I found I was good at it and ended up staying four years, before I was offered a chance to do something similar but for an agency in Hong Kong. I was in Asia for a year, but I quickly realised I wanted to see the full lifecycle of the products I built.
I knew some people from my advertising days who did a similar pivot and joined a start-up in Los Angeles, which made mindfulness and meditation available to the masses. When I joined there were less than 100 people working there, so I got an opportunity to try lots of things from content production to operations to product management. I worked on all aspects of the business from producing animations that taught meditation techniques, to building the content library so it guided people to the right meditation at the right time, to launching Mental Health Coaching services.
Three years ago, I made another jump to live internationally which guided me to MyEdSpace. Again,the mission - being able to help children increase their confidence and improve their lives, while working alongside good people - resonated with me. During that time, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the team grow and hearing the positive impact MyEdSpace has had on so many lives.
